AI Literacy Training: Training the Philadelphia Law Department on Lawyers’ Use of GenAI

A few months ago, representatives of the Philadelphia Law Department reached out to request I train their entire department about GenAI and use of GenAI by lawyers for legal work. I was honored by the request. So, on July 24, 2025, I presented a GenAI Literacy training to the entire Philadelphia Law Department. During this training, I covered what GenAI is, and most importantly it is not.

I focused on how GenAI is not objective, precise, or inherently ethical. During the training we discussed whether GenAI hallucinations are improving (they are not) and how lawyers can prevent their work from including AI Hallucinations. We further discussed the confidential and privacy implications of inserting information into Chatbots.

Because this was a room full of lawyers (over 250+), we went over the PA Rules of Professional Conduct for PA lawyers, and what the board has stated was ethical use of GenAI by attorneys. The most important take away is for lawyers to ethically use GenAI they must educate themselves on how GenAI works and its impact on their clients.

Overall, the audience was very engaged and asked several questions at the conclusion of the training. One of their first questions was about how to stay up to date about GenAI. Following blogs like this one is a smart way to stay up to date on the technological advances of AI and its impact on the professional and business world.
